Civility

Having watched both political conventions on television, and anticipating the battles coming between now and November, I submit Luther’s explanation of the meaning of the 8th Commandment (You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor) for national consideration and repentance:
“We are to fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbors, betray or slander them, or destroy their reputations.  Instead we are to come to their defense, speak well of them, and interpret everything they do in the best possible light.”
Who is my neighbor?  Everyone who is in need, including my “enemies”. (Luke 10:25-37)
We offer the peace of God and the reconciling  work of Jesus Christ.
We offer Jesus, who breaks down every barrier.
Let us really listen this election season, and let our words be a credit to Jesus, who is in us.
